Commonwealth medals for Penarth boxers!

TWO BOXERS from Penarth have returned victorious from the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India.

Penarth ABC fighters Joe Morgan and Keiron Harding both won bronze in the welterweight and middleweight divisions respectively.

Some 37 athletes from Wales travelled to the Indian city for the games. The team consisted of badminton players, boxers, a shooting team, swimmers, tennis players, table tennis players and weightlifters.

Team Wales won 16 medals, including five gold, which led them to finishing a respectable sixth place in the medals table.

Joe said: "I'm really pleased that all my hard work has paid off and I'm really proud of the success of Team Wales at the Commonwealth Youth Games.

"Our achievements have been a real boost and everyone is looking forward to training hard, with an eye on the Olympics in 2012."

In total, 71 countries were competing at the games with India topping the medals table with 76 including 33 gold.

Chris Jenkins, Commonwealth Games Council for Wales director, said: "Many of the athletes that took part in the Youth Games will be strong candidates for Delhi 2010 and beyond for London in 2012."
