Penarth boxer Kyron destined
to be a champion

KYRON Pring is Penarth ABC's only Welsh Champion this year.

Injuries and boys quitting meant it was not a very good year for Penarth as far as titles are concerned.

But as coach Neil Munn said: "It is the hardest game in the world. Winning a title is hard, but defending it is even harder."

So now, Kyron had to defend his British title. He fought Danny Tarling of Scotland in the semi-final at Swansea Leisure Centre on April 25.

It was a contest where Kyron showed his class, his speed, accuracy and power forcing Tarling to take a standing count in the second round.

But in the third round the Penarth boy began to stiffen up and although he still won the round and the fight, Kyron and Neil both knew he could not afford to do that in the final.

In the other semi Isaac McLeod, of England, totally outclassed his opponent, so they knew they had their work cut out.

The stage was set for an exciting final and it lived up to everyone's expectations.

Neil told Kyron he had to take the fight to the English lad, and he did brilliantly in the opening round catching his opponent with some lovely one-twos. The round was even.

In the second round he was urged to go up a gear and although both boys landed good shots, Neil thought his boxer had done enough to shade the round. It was a shock to see that the judges scored it 9-4 to McLeod.

It was all or nothing in the final round and both lads threw everything at each other. The decision was announced - 10-6 to McLeod.

Kyron was disappointed but Neil told him to hold his head high and be proud. His coach was certainly proud of him! It was the best fight of the night.
